Seeing the Invisible

Just because you cannot see something does not mean that it is not real or it does not exist.

Seeing is Believing?

Not really. Believing is believing.

Heb. 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

2 Cor 5:7 " (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)"

God is real.  God is invisible.

No man has seen God at any time.  (John 1:18)

The spirit world is usually NOT visible to us.  It is a reality in another dimension that we do not often see, even though we can experience it when it is at work.

We can "sense" the presence of evil.

We know that we are of God and the whole world is swimming in wicked spirits.  (1 John 5:19)

Moses "saw" Him who is invisible.  (Heb. 11:27)

The Prophet's Prayer

Elijah the prophet had a "school" for his "sons."  Prophets often had adherents similarly to how Hebrew rabbis had disciples.

Jesus was a Rabbi and He had disciples.  Some of them he selected to be "apostles" that were to carry on His message and work.

Elijah had disciples or assistant prophets, called "sons."  We know that a prophet could ordain assistants that would share in his prophetic gifts as he chose.

Consider the Elijah - Elisha relationship.  Elisha was one of Elijah's "sons" that asked him for a "double portion" of his spirit.  Elijah told him, "you've asked for a hard thing."  Why?  Only God could call someone to be a prophet.  Elijah told him, "If you see me go, then you'll have what you seek."  When Elisha saw his own  vision of the glory of God - that was his call to be a regular prophet, not just a "son."

Elisha Now a Father

Elisha had been a "son" of Elijah and now he was a "father" and had is own "sons" or servants or assistants helping him in his ministry.

In carrying out his regular service for Elisha, a servant had arisen early and saw the Syrian army that had encircled Elisha and his entire camp at the Jordan River.

He was startled and pointed this out to Elisha: "Look, master!  What shall we do?"

Elisha told him "don't be afraid, we've got a far greater army protecting us".

Of course, the servant could not SEE the army.  There was the doubting disciples and the famous "doubting Thomas" and now we have the "doubting servant."

We are not told this, but it seems likely that the servant's face was still filled with fear and Elisha could see it, so he prayed.

God, Help us to See

He prayed that God would OPEN the servant's eyes so he could SEE the army.

The army was surrounding them and opposing the Syrian army.  The mountain was FULL of them.  The had horses and chariots of FIRE.  It was the normally invisible angelic host..

We need not fear our enemy.  We need only to fear God.  He is the only legitimate fear Object.

We don't fight against flesh and blood but against wicked spirits. (Eph. 6:10-12

The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
~ Psa. 34:7

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. ~  I John 4:4
