Read Psalms Chapter 1

Godly or Ungodly

This first Psalm provides a simple contrast between the godly and the ungodly; the prospering and the perishing.

Read also Jeremiah chapter 17:5-8.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

~ Psa. 1:1-6

The Godly

They say No

Their lives in their relationship to the world around them is characterized by the word "NO!"

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

~ 1 John 2:15-17

They say NO to the world's ADVICE.  (they don't walk in the counsel of the ungodly)

They say NO to the world's ACTIONS. (they don't stand in the way of sinners)

They say NO to the world's ATTITUDES . (they don't sit in the seat of the scornful)

Their Delight

They LOVE God's word.  They only think about it twice a day ... that is day and night, all day long!

They Prosper

He shall be as a tree, well-nourished, with deep roots and keeping their leaves regardless of seasonal changes.  Whatever they do will prosper.

God makes them to prosper!

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.

For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

~ Jer. 17:7-8

Obedience to God brings true prosperity.

Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

~ Joshua 1:6-8

And finally, when they come before God in judgment, they STAND.

The Ungodly

Everything that was true about the godly is UNTRUE about the ungodly.

They say Yes

They go along with what the world wants.

  • They listen to its advice.
  • They are of the world, so their actions fit with the world.
  • They share the same attitudes with the world.

Their Delight

Whatever the world brings before them.

They Perish

They will not be able to stand in the congregation with the righteous and they will not be able to "stand" when they are judged by God.

Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.

For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

~ Jer. 17:5-6
