Read Hosea Chapter 1
When God Disowns His People
8 Now when she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.
9 Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.
~ Hos. 1:8-9
In order to visually and firmly illustrate to God's people how He felt, God instructs Hosea to marry a harlot and to have children by her. This woman that he married was not going to depart from her occupation, however. As strange as this is, this is what God instructed him to do.
The land had committed great whoredoms: it had become overcome with idolatry. Idolatry frequently is attached the meaning of "spiritual adultery."
As an eventual result, Gomer (the woman he married), would have a son that God told Hosea to call "Loammi", which essentially means "not my son."
Jezreel
Jezreel was to the the name of Hosea's firstborn with Gomer. For the back story, read 2 Kings chapters 9-10. God was going to avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu. This was going to mark the end of the northern kingdom of Israel.
Loruhamah
This daughter's was given the name meaning "no mercy". God is saying that the kingdom of Israel was going to be eliminated, no more chances for mercy.
Mercy was going to be reserved for the house of Judah (the southern kingdom).
God promised to save them personally, not via their army or war.
Loammi
His name means "not my people".
Samaria and Judah were going to be judged just like the idolatrous nations about them, because they had become just like them.
God would revisit them in mercy eventually, but He is declaring now that they are no longer His people.
They had joined themselves with the gods of the nations.
Don't become an idolater.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

Anything that we use as a god becomes our god.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost.
7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

Covetousness is idolatry
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
~ Col. 3:5
Keep Yourselves from idols.
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
