Read 2 Samuel Chapter 1
Do Not Hurt God's Anointed Ones
14 And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the Lord's anointed?
15 And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.
16 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the Lord's anointed.
~ 2 Sam. 1:14-16
The Amalakite was surely aware that David was blessed by God and that Saul had fallen out of God's favor. He was likely also aware that Saul was trying to kill David.
He likely knew also that David was indeed the legitimate king of Israel.
He was surely expecting to be rewarded for killing David's enemy, King Saul. But he was very wrong!
8 He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.
9 Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac;
10 And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant:
11 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance:
12 When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it.
13 When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people;
14 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes;
15 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
~ Psa. 105:8-15
David had opportunities to defend himself against Saul and take his life, but he refused to do so.
David Recognized Divine Authority
The reference to God's anointed refers to the prophet ceremonially pouring oil upon the head of the man that God had chosen for the nation to be king. Ceremonial anointings were also done for priests, and sometimes, prophets, as when Elijah anointed Elisha as his successor.
The oil was symbolic of the Holy Spirit, signifying the choice of God and the authority of God upon the individual that was anointed.
David knew that Saul had been anointed by the prophet Samuel.
David knew that Saul was God's choice for king.
King Saul's disobedience to God's commands regarding the destruction of the Amalekites resulted in his being rejected by God to continue to serve as Israel's king. (See 1 Sam. 15)
David Refused to Touch Saul
David had been anointed as King, but Samuel gave him no instruction from God about dethroning Saul. David submitted to Saul's leadership and served him faithfully and was loyal to him.
Regardless, Saul became jealous of David and sought to kill him. Repeatedly.
David never retaliated agains Saul.
David NEVER tried to defend himself.
He trusted God to take care of him (and Saul).
Read 1 Samuel 24
David Retaliated Against the Amalekite
David one of his young warriors to kill the Amalekite, and at the same time, told the man that he was going to die for having killed Saul.
From Saul's distorted perspective, David was his enemy, but from David's divine perspective, Saul was his master.
Respect God's Authority
17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
~ Heb. 13:17
