Commands to Obey?  There are two ways of finding things: to casually stumble upon something or to be diligently seeking something on purpose.  Does the passage you are reading in God's Word contain any commands that you should obey?  See the Berean Bible Study method for a more complete explanation.

Be Fruitful & Multiply

~ Gen. 1:28-31

God created man to rule over the earth.

In eternity past, there was God and nothing else.  Then, God began creating things according to the good pleasure of His own will.

We learn early in the beginning of the book of Genesis that God created the heaven and the earth.  God created light and divided the light from the darkness (non-light), and the firmament above us.

God used the firmament to divide the waters above it from the waters beneath it.  He gathered all of the waters beneath into one place and made the dry land (earth) appear.

God made vegetation; grass, herbs and trees.  God made lights in the firmament of heaven: the sun, the moon and the stars.

God made creatures to swim in the waters, fly in the skies, and walk on the earth.

Everything that God made was good!

Then, He commanded them (the animals) to be fruitful and multiply and fill the seas, the skies and the earth.

Then, God made man.

He made Adam and then used Adam's rib to make a companion for him (Eve).

God made man to rule over everything that He had created on earth.

The Hierarchy

God is the absolute Sovereign.  There are various heavenly beings that God has created as well, and they were all "higher" than man was when he was created.

God made "mankind" both male and female and they were partners in the beginning.  Adam was not created to rule over Eve.  They were co-rulers of the earth.

Due to Eve's disobedience in her deception, God place man "above" her in the heavenly hierarchy.  (Gen. 3:16)

Adam and Eve were to be "king and queen" of the earth.

God's Charge to Man

The first command that God gave to Adam and Eve was to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

BE FRUITFUL

"Be full of fruit" God told them.  God wanted them to reproduce themselves.  As a result of this, the numbers of humanity would be multiplying.  Adam and Eve would continue to have children regularly.  I would suggest a child or two each year for hundreds of years, and their children would be having children, too - this is what you call "multiplying".

This multiplication of human beings would eventually fill the earth, and that is what the Creator intended.

God Wants Us to Be Fruitful

John 15:4-8

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

Spiritually, God wants us to reproduce ourselves.

To do this, we must "abide in Christ."  We must maintain fellowship with Him.

We are powerless to bear spiritual fruit if we are not vitally connected to Him.

Without Him, we can do ... nothing.

I don't want to do anything without Him, how about you?

If we abide in Christ, that is if we maintain our spiritual life and walk with Him, we will be bearing much fruit, and this will bring glory to our Creator, our Father in heaven.

After all, we have been created to bring Him glory AND bring Him pleasure

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.  (Rev. 4:11)

Bearing the fruit of the Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.  (Gal. 5:22-23)

Be fruitful.  Be full of fruit.

God's Spirit that lives within us will cause these "fruits" to be borne through us.  Essentially, all of those listed that follow love are outgrowths of love.

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.  (Rom. 5:5)

God's love is in broadcast into our hearts by His Holy Spirit.
