Read Song of Solomon Chapter 1
Solomon's Sensuous Cinderella
6 Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
~ Song of Solomon 1:6
Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines, so we see that his wisdom did not permeate every part of his life! (1 Kings 11:1-8)
This one young woman, the Shulamite girl, however was most likely his first wife and "the wife" of his youth. He was captivated by her. It seems likely that this young Shunamite was the same one that cared for David as he was dying. (1 Kin. 1:1–4, 15)
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
~ Eccl. 9:9
Her family was likely employed by King David and later King Solomon, which is another way he would have been aware of her. (Song of Sol. 8:11)
Her Jealous Siblings
We know from the narrative, this love song that Solomon penned that tells of him being "head over heels" in love with this young woman, that she had brothers and sisters. She wasn't the youngest of her family, but it seems that she ended up being manipulated by her brothers and sisters.
They made her the keeper of the vineyards. She was responsible for them. It seems she also had her own vineyard that she was not able to keep well because she was always so busied in doin the work for the family's vineyards, probably in the employ of King Solomon.
It seems that the others were boys with the exception of a little sister, that likely was the baby of the family.
Her Mother's Favor
9 My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
~ Song of Solomon 6:9
She actually was not the only daughter, but she was the oldest and the choice of her mother.
8 We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?
~ Song of Solomon 8:8
This young woman (likely Abishag) was the choice of the one that bare her. Her mother poured a lot into the training of her daughter.
Her Good Reputation
8 There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
9 My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
~ Song of Solomon 6:8-9
Solomon was ravished by her beauty but he was also captivated by her good character.
Her Love Song
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
~ Prov. 5:18-20
This Song of Solomon, also referred to as the Song of Songs, meaning that it was the epitome of poems penned by Solomon.
Their friendship and sensuous love relationship comprises the entire book.
