Commands to Obey? There are two ways of finding things: to casually stumble upon something or to be diligently seeking something on purpose. Does the passage you are reading in God's Word contain any commands that you should obey? See the Berean Bible Study method for a more complete explanation.

Read 1 Samuel Chapter 6
Deadly Curiosity
You've heard that "curiosity killed the cat." Here we read that 50,070 men died of Bethshemesh that looked inside of the ark.
When they saw the ark coming, they glanced upon it from afar, they rejoiced. (1 Sam. 6:13)
But when they gazed into the ark, they lamented. (1 Sam. 6:19)
Look and Live
Numbers 21:8 "And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live."
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
~ John 3:1-15
To "look" upon Jesus is to believe in him. Look and live!
Look and Die
No one was supposed to look into the ark of the covenant, it was understood that to do so meant that God would kill them. When the ark was in the Holy Place, and the high priest would enter the holy of holies on the day of atonement, the incense that was burning as well as the glory cloud would obscure the atmosphere within the room so that the ark could not be seen.
The high priest would sprinkle some blood upon the lid of the ark (called the mercy seat), but he NEVER opened the ark ... therefore he would have never seen the inside, either.
When the ark was being moved properly, it was always covered, but it was NEVER touched. To touch it was to die. (Num. 4:15)
The ark was to be the very special place where the manifest presence of God would dwell.
The ark of the covenant contained the ten commandments, the pot of manna and Aaron's rod that budded. These were all testimonies of God's direct intervention.
And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
Exodus 33:17-20
Holy, Holy, Holy
The ark of the covenant on earth was a type of the presence of God in heaven. Three times we are given a glimpse into heaven's throne-room and what do we see and hear?
1) Four seraphims above the throne, each with six wings.
Isa. 6:1-3
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
And one cried unto another, and said,
Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts:
the whole earth is full of his glory.
2) Four living creatures below the throne with four wings.
Ezek. 1:4-7
And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire. Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures.
And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.
3) Four living creatures about the throne, each with six wings.
Rev. 4:5-8
And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
They never stop shouting Holy, Holy, Holy.
Let us always maintain our reverence for God.
