Read Exodus Chapter 6
Bringing Out, To, and In
Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:
7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the Lord.
~ Gen. 6:6-8
God promised to do a complete work on behalf of the children of Abraham / Israel. He promised to bring them out from under the bondage of the Egyptians, to bring them to Himself and to bring them in to the land of promise.
Bringing OUT of Bondage
The children of Israel in slavery (bondage) in Egypt are typical of the universal human condition. We are all slaves to this world of sin and in need of deliverance.
For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
~ Romans 6:20-22
We WERE servants or slaves to sin. We have been delivered by Jesus Christ from that awful state. We have a progressive salvation. We HAVE been saved. We ARE being saved. We SHALL be saved.
9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
~ 2 Cor. 1:9-10
We already have been saved from sin's PENALTY. We are being saved from sin's POWER. We shall some day be saved from sin's PRESENCE.
Bringing TO God
When God brought His people OUT of Egypt, He was first bringing them back to Himself. God had already called Abraham to Himself and had made from him a great nation.
17 And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
~ Gen. 18:17-19
God called Abraham and he was faithful to God. God knew Abraham. He knew that Abraham would teach and command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord.
The people had grown great in the land of Egypt and were quite comfortable there until a new pharaoh came to power that did not have the understanding of Egypt's special relationship with Israel.
God said, "I'm taking you for myself. I am your God. You are MY people." We belong to God.
Bringing IN to the Land of Promise
It was mentioned earlier that our "salvation" is "progressive." Consider how God delivers us.
1) He brings us first across the Red Sea - this is typical of our salvation.
God delivers us from the oppressive bondage and penalty of sin by His great power.
2) He brings us to Himself. This is typical of our security. He claims us as His own.
3) But there was another barrier that had to be crossed before they entered the land of promise, - the land that flowed with milk and honey, the Jordan River. This is typical of our sanctification.
The land of Canaan though sometimes used in Christian hymns to refer to heaven, is NOT a type of heaven. In Canaan there were battles with giants!
We will not be fighting battles in heaven. We must fight the good fight of faith only while we are on this present earth.
The land God is given us is this victorious Christian life, but we must stand and fight and take it. If we want to feast upon the grapes of Eshcol and enjoy the land of milk and honey, we've got to fight the giants.
22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.
23 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
Josh. 1:22-25
