Call His Name JESUS!
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.
~ Matt. 1:18-25
Go promised His chosen people, Israel, a Messiah. This Messiah, meaning "anointed" was someone that was chosen by God. Christ means anointed.
God promised that this Messiah would deliver His people.
The Jews primarily expected their Messiah to deliver them from the oppression of the gentiles. This was going to be a PART of what He would do, but his number one mission was to take care of their number one problem: their sins.
The Messiah's Genealogy
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
~ Matt. 1:1
In order for someone to be considered as a candidate for their Messiah, He must qualify. Was He from the chosen people of God (the nation of Israel)?
Was he from the tribe of Judah, or was he a "son of David?"
The Messiah would have to qualify in his genealogy FIRST.
Of course, Jesus was a son of David and a son of Abraham, so He qualified.
There were going to be other qualifications as well, but if he did not come with the correct genealogy, nothing else mattered.
The Messiah's Name
It was common among the nation of Israel for a child to be given a "family" name. This was especially expected for their firstborn son. To be named after the father or a grandfather or some other honored male in their family history. We see a glimpse of this in the birth of John the baptist.
57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
~ Luke 1:57-64
God named John. His angel told Zacharias that their son's name was to be John. The name John means "God is gracious." This child was to be the forerunner of the Messiah.
God named Jesus. His angel told Joseph "Mary is pregnant with a child from God. She was a virgin. Don't be afraid to take her as your wife." Their son's name was to be John. The name John means "God saves".
The Messiah's Identity
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
~ Matt. 1:23
His personal name was to be Jesus, but He would also be called "Immanuel", which means "God with us."
Jesus was His official name, because of what He would do: save people. He would be the Savior. Him being referred to as Immanuel referred to His identity: He would be God in the flesh.
What a Wonder!
THE WONDER OF WONDERS AS SHE LOOKED ON HIS FACE
THAT THIS LITTLE BOY SPOKE THE WORLDS IN THEIR PLACE
THE STARS AND THE MOON, SHINNING BRIGHTLY ON THEM
THE EARTH AND THE SUN WERE CREATED BY HIM
THE WONDER OF WONDERS AS SHE HEARD HIS SMALL CRY
THAT THIS VOICE HAD THUNDERED ON MOUNT SINAI
THE HAND THAT SHE HELD SO TENDERLY
HAD MADE A DRY PATH THRU THE MIGHTY RED SEA
THE WONDER OF WONDERS AS SHE LOOKED DOWN AND SMILED
THAT HE WAS HER MAKER AS WELL AS HER CHILD
HE CREATED THE WOMB THAT HAD GIVEN HIM BIRTH
HE WAS GOD INCARNATE COME DOWN TO THE EARTH.
VERSE 4 (NOT RECORDED BY THE INSPIRATIONS)
THE WONDER OF WONDERS AS A FATHER LOOKED ON
IN ETERNITY PAST THIS WAS HIS SON
HAD SENT HIM TO DIE ON CALVARY'S TREE
AND THAT IS THE WONDER OF WONDERS TO ME
Chorus
THE WONDER OF WONDERS OH HOW COULD IT BE
THAT GOD BECAME FLESH AND WAS GIVEN FOR ME
THE ALMIGHTY CAME DOWN AND WALKED AMONG MEN
THE WONDER OF WONDERS HE DIED FOR MY SIN
