Read 1 Chronicles Chapter 1
When God Divides
This chapter repeats the genealogy that is recorded in Genesis chapter 10. It is difficult to discover truths that we can apply to our lives from such passages, but we have this single reference regarding what happened during the lifetime of Peleg; in his days, the earth was divided.
It is good and pleasing to God when brethren dwell together in unity, as long as they are doing so in honor of the LORD.
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.'
~ Psalm 133
However, when men assemble together in opposition to the LORD, it is evil and unpleasing to God.
19 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: and his brother's name was Joktan.
~ 1 Chron. 1:19
Why God Divides
God divided the nations to prevent them from becoming ONE in rebellion against him. This defiance of God is still seen today, and world rulers attempt to bring the entire earth under the singular rule of the evil one.
Oneness in concert with God's rule is blessed, but in defiance against God, it is cursed.
They are determined to achieve absolute self-determination apart from the rule of God, the Creator.
Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
~ Psalm 2
Division for Distinction
Things need to be set apart from one another when the do not belong together.
9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:
10 And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;
11 And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.
~ Lev. 10:9-11
You will see this principle throughout the scriptures by commands and types. Read these following passages to see a few examples: (Deut. 22:10; Lev. 19:19; 2 Cor. 6:16-18)
Jesus Divides, Too
Jesus is the Prince of Peace, but there are times when He brings a sword. He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29), but He is also the Lion of the tribe of Judah. (Rev. 5:5)
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
~ Matt. 10:32-38

The Lamb is a Lion!
5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
~ Rev. 5:5-6
